One saying goes: A data scientist is someone who is better at Statistics than any software engineer and better at Software Engineering than any statistician.

Programming skills in C#, R, Java (including Clojure) and even C/C++ for experts are bonuses.
Skills in Statistics and more importantly some French bon sens (common sense, discernment) seem mandatory before trying new fancy algorithms on real-world problems.
