What is a Data Scientist?

One saying goes: A data scientist is someone who is better at Statistics than any software engineer and better at Software Engineering than any statistician.

For beginners with some Math and Programming background, here are two books to get the right mix of skills between Statistics and Computer Sciences:

Programming skills in C#, R, Java (including Clojure) and even C/C++ for experts are bonuses.

Skills in Statistics and more importantly some French bon sens  (common sense, discernment) seem mandatory before trying new fancy algorithms on real-world problems.
